For decades, perhaps “Why Liberalism Failed is a sobering look at an ideological turning point in history. It’s one of the few books deserving of being called revelatory.

So, in Why Liberalism Failed, Deneen points out how liberalism’s triumph over the failed ideology of socialism proved to be its undoing. According to Deneen, socialism leads to lost freedoms, so it fails, but the extravagant individual freedoms and lack of corresponding responsibility caused by liberalism have also led to liberalism’s undoing.

And it is communitarian in distrusting individual choice, looking fearfully forward, and affirming that Plato’s Republic and its coercive utopianism in the style of Sparta should be our model for method. The book is very American, and effectively ignores the European Socialist tradition, which provides (an always did), an alternative and coherent ideology to Liberalism, which is why Liberals were always so bitterly opposed to Socialism. And it ends on a rather artificially upbeat note, suggesting that somehow Liberalism is capable off reform.

Deneen observes that the political promise of liberalism has always been to provide full liberty for all. But to Deneen, this is ultimately impossible.
